That heavy, aching feeling has nothing to do with age. When you stand, sit or walk for long periods, gravity works against your circulation. Blood and fluid pool in your lower legs and ankles, causing that familiar heaviness, fatigue and swelling that builds through the day. It is your body struggling to push blood back up.
Swelling happens when fluid builds up in the tissues of your feet and ankles — caused by poor circulation, long periods on your feet, travel or heat. Your veins struggle to push blood back up against gravity, and fluid leaks into surrounding tissue. The result is that puffy, tight feeling that makes your shoes feel two sizes too small by the afternoon.
Most compression socks apply uniform pressure — which can actually slow circulation instead of helping it.
